Evolution of the Apple Key (Cufflinks)

Apple key evolution

Apple cufflinks

Mac cufflinks

6 new pairs of MAC keyboard cufflinks added to the GEEKWARE store today!

The Command key, also historically known as the Apple key or open-Apple key, has taken many forms over the years.

The cufflinks above showcase the evolution of the Command key, from the Apple IIe released in 1983, to the controversial removal of the Apple symbol in the 2007 redesign.  (The removal of the symbol triggered a storm of protests by Apple aficionados, who felt that a unique design feature of the Macintosh was being dropped without a compelling need.)

Can you guess which pair of MAC cufflinks is made from the oldest keys, and which is the most recent?

Make-Your-Own Geek Christmas Ornaments: Part 9

December 19th, 2008 Nicola Posted in Christmas, Circuitboard, DIY Projects, Keyboards 2 Comments »

How to: Keyboard Circuitry Sheet Christmas Ornaments

You’ll need:

  • old keyboard
  • brads or paper fasteners
  • scissors or paper cutter

Take apart an old keyboard and remove the flexible circuitboard sheet from under the keys.

Cut into 2cm strips using a paper cutter or scissors.

For the round ornament, wind one strip into coils until you like the shape, then punch a hole in the top, through all the sheets. Attach a brad through the hole.

For the other one, cut the strips into: 1 short one, 2 medium and 2 long. Arrange from large to small to large and punch a hole through the top and bottom of each. Attach them all together with a brad through the hole.

Tie a loop of ribbon around the brad and hang them on your tree!

The inspiration for these came from Elise’s paper bag ornaments here. Check out how you can use the same method to make all sorts of different shapes, depending on how you vary the lengths of the strips.

[I would have photographed these on a nice tree outdoors like the rest of this series, but it's -30C and way too cold to be playing with a camera and holding my breath for a minute to prevent steamy pics!]

Make-Your-Own Geek Christmas Ornaments: Part 6

November 24th, 2008 Nicola Posted in Christmas, DIY Projects, Keyboards 3 Comments »

Got a bit sidetracked with orders and shows this past week! But the GEEK tree ornament series now continues with: Space Bar Icicles!

How to: Space Bar Icicle Christmas Ornament

You’ll need:

  • old space bars
  • old ribbon
  • glue
  • white Christmas embellishments
  • glitter glue

Glue the ribbon onto the back of the space bar to create a loop for hanging.  Add some reused curling ribbons to the hanging ribbon.  Glue any Christmas embellishments onto the spacebar - I used white snowflakes and snowmen.  To finish it off I also added dots of glitter glue.

Make-Your-Own Geek Christmas Ornaments: Part 1

November 6th, 2008 Nicola Posted in Christmas, DIY Projects, Keyboards 14 Comments »

Just finished working on 100 electronic-waste-themed Christmas ornaments!

I has lots of fun coming up with ideas for using old electronics in each design that I thought I’d share them with you over the next month.

I was commissioned to make these for a client in the waste management industry, and they will be on display on a charity tree at the ‘Festival of Trees’ in Fort McMurray, Alberta.

How to: Keyboard key word ornaments

You’ll need:

  • curling ribbon or fabric ribbon in the colour of your choice (I recycled ribbon in various shades of green).
  • card or fabric in a matching colour (I used green felt).
  • an old keyboard or two.
  • hot glue gun.

Pick off the keyboard keys to make the words of your choice.  I chose NOEL, JOY and HOHOHO, but you could also spell LOVE, PEACE etc. If you only have one keyboard, you may have to get creative with vowels and use the numbers 3 and 0 to represent E and O.

Glue ends of ribbon down a strip of fabric or card, forming a loop at the top. Glue the letters onto the fabric, ontop of the ribbon. Trim fabric around the letters. Add additional ribbons if desired and curl with a knife.

Hang and enjoy your 1st geeky tree ornaments creation!

Stay tuned for the next installment tomorrow….

Vintage Keyboard Finds

October 14th, 2007 Nicola Posted in Geekware, Keyboards No Comments »

Here’s some of my latest finds. I don’t know much about the age of these keyboards, but I love the random text and symbols on them.

I’m thinking cufflinks for the arrows, tie tac pins for the XXX key, cell phone charms for the ‘TEXT’ key and a keychain from the ‘LOCK’ key. What do you think?

E-waste Recycling

October 12th, 2007 Nicola Posted in Geekware, Keyboards No Comments »

Picture this: A huge pile of old electronics, tangled cords, hard drives piled up high, weathered and unloved. And me, having the BEST DAY EVER! I couldn’t wait to get started!
I managed to find LOTS of keyboards, although they are all very muddy from being outside for a long time. They will take quite a bit of cleaning once I’ve harvested the parts I am going to use.

Check out this chunky old Commodore keyboard I found… I’m going to have fun with these keys.

This is my ideal Saturday afternoon :)
